Brown Bag Lecture: Francis Scott Key

During the Battle of Baltimore, Francis Scott Key was engaged in negotiations regarding the release of American soldiers but due to the belief Key had specific knowledge of the British fleet, he was refused permission to return to his own ship. Key, portrayed by Bob Gleason, remembers that night in September of 1814, watching, helplessly, as the British began their assault on Fort McHenry. With the images of the battle still fresh in his mind as he returned home, Key tells of writing the poem “Defense of Fort McHenry” which was later adopted as the National Anthem in 1931.
