Program Description

Event Details

Phyllis Wheatley was the first published African-American poet and first African-American female published writer. Taken from her home in South Africa on a slave ship when she was only 7, she was bought by the affluent and well-connected Wheatley family in Boston. Uncommonly intelligent, Wheatley was provided with a life and experiences uncommon to most slaves of her day. Hear Phyllis Wheatley, portrayed Dr. Daisy Century, share her stories and what it was like to live her life between two worlds, belonging to neither.
